When we ask questions, we learn more information. As fundraisers, we work hard to understand our donors and what motivates them to donate. Surveys are a wonderful tool to learn more about your donors while also increasing engagement and response. In addition to demographic questions, you can ask donors what inspires them to support your mission, and what projects are most important to them.

Impact utilizes survey campaigns for all our planned giving clients with questions designed to remind donors of their shared values with the organization. People For the American Way completed their first planned giving survey in 2021. Mailed to more than 49,000 prospects and followed up with an online survey to a more targeted group, the campaign generated 304 planned giving leads. Of that total, seven donors revealed that they had already left a gift to the organization.

As the staff at People For followed up with these donors, they found the donor-provided information from the survey invaluable. Chief Development Officer, Elise Convy said, “We didn’t know what to expect from our first survey, but we are thrilled with the number of leads and the new Liberty Circle members. Plus the survey gave us great insights about our most valuable donors.”
