Content Creation with A DEI Lens

As we work to create a world with more seats at the table, (and maybe even a different table), how do we as content creators bring a DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice) lens to our work?

As a content creator, it is imperative to consider where you are getting your information. Sourcing is very important. For example, if you are reaching out to a source for quotes or information– you are more likely to get the “same old experts” unless you actively push for new voices.

It’s ok to ask to speak with a Black, Latinx/e or Native representative, a person with a disability, or a young person to gain a different perspective. Spotlighting different voices is not just a “check the box” exercise, it can actually change the content in ways that make it better and more broadly relevant.

To improve your content, it’s important to follow and subscribe to writers and media sources serving BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Latinx/e and other diverse communities. Listening to diverse voices and sources helps ensure that your content is created with a broader understanding of key issues. Do an assessment of your twitter feed, podcast list and other content feeds—are you hearing from a variety of communities? What are the communities that impact your work? There are dozens and dozens of unique organizations and perspectives: LGBTQ+ exclusive journalism sources, veteran-focused nurses, women pilots, black engineers, and more. All it takes is the initiative, intention and time to actively seek out those voices.

Your materials are seen by so many different eyes, and it’s critical for constituents to see themselves in your material – it will bring them closer to your organization and mission, and you will see the return on investment with higher interaction.
